Hearing the Still Small Voice

Weekly Inspiration

Isa 19:11-13

1Ki 19:11  And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
1Ki 19:12  And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
1Ki 19:13  And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

Elijah was seeking God but was caught up in loud sound and noise.  God can speak to us in a number of different ways.  Let’s not be so focused on the fire, wind and thunder (loud sounds) that we ignore the still small voice.  It is not an audible voice, but one that we can hear in our hearts.  Notice when Elijah could hear God’s voice, he heard the questions God was asking him concerning what he was doing and where he was going – in other words, the decisions he was making.  Some children of God shut down at this point, not realizing God is speaking to them.  Some people are so busy running, following after trends, fortune and/or fame that they are not even aware of where those decisions have led them.

Every child of God must understand that He asks us questions so we can consider our ways.  If we ignore the questions God is asking or stubbornly continue forward, we are not responding to the conversation correctly.  It is through the series of questions and answers that God gets us to recognize the correct path and the instructions we should be following.

This week, work on embracing the silence and setting your heart to hear God.  The Bible tells us that God made the seeing eye and hearing ear.  Jesus told us His disciples know His voice and hear His Words.  That means that every one of God's children can hear Him.  We have to practice being still and quiet in order to hear God's voice.  Just as our natural parents and mentors talk with us to guide and assist us, God does the same.  The awesome thing is God's guidance is based on Him knowing everything.

Since God knows everything in every time, we should be excited about hearing His voice and receiving guidance.  The Prophet Eli told Samuel when he was a small boy to reply to the voice he heard, "Speak Lord, Thy servant hears Thee".  Let this be your confession before God this and every week.  Still yourself, and practice hearing the voice of God concerning His will for your life.  He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think.  Begin to practice spending time with God every day at the beginning of the day.  Keep at it and do not get discouraged or allow the outside noise to deter you from hearing God.  Remember the saying, "Practice makes Perfect"!!
